WHAT’S YOUR MTB LEVEL ?
LEVEL 0 — BEGINNER
You can ride a bike on roads or gravel tracks, but you have little or no experience mountain biking on trails.
LEVEL 1 — NOVICE
You ride mountain bikes occasionally and are comfortable on easy tracks and trails. You’re starting to ride on uneven terrain with small roots, rocks and moderate gradients.
LEVEL 2 — INTERMEDIATE
You ride mountain bikes regularly and are comfortable on a variety of trails. You can handle steeper climbs and descents, ride over roots and rocks and negotiate moderately technical sections.
LEVEL 3 — ADVANCED
You’re comfortable on technical and steep trails, with roots, rocks, tight corners and natural obstacles. You ride red Bike Park / DH trails confidently and can handle small jumps and drops.
LEVEL 4 — EXPERT
You’re an experienced rider, comfortable on very technical, steep and demanding trails. Tight switchbacks, rock gardens, roots, exposed sections, large obstacles, jumps, gaps and drops are all terrain you know how to handle.
You’re comfortable on black Bike Park / DH trails and know how to adapt your riding to the conditions and terrain.
ASSESS YOUR TECHNICAL & FITNESS LEVEL
Knowing your MTB level helps us adapt your lesson, tour and choice of trails to your experience and fitness.
Use the two scales below to identify your MTB technical level and MTB fitness level. There’s no need to overestimate your ability: the goal is simply to choose the terrain and pace that will allow you to make the most of your ride in Verbier.
MTB TECHNICAL LEVEL

MTB FITNESS LEVEL
LEVEL 0 — EASY GOING
You do little physical activity and prefer shorter rides with minimal elevation gain and a relaxed pace.
LEVEL 1 — RECREATIONAL
You exercise occasionally and can ride for around 2–3 hours at a comfortable pace, with breaks.
LEVEL 2 — INTERMEDIATE
You exercise regularly and can ride for around 3–5 hours in the mountains, with moderate elevation gain and some more demanding sections.
LEVEL 3 — ADVANCED
You have a good level of fitness and are used to longer rides. You can ride for 5–7 hours in the mountains, tackle long climbs and occasionally manage sections where you need to push or carry your bike.
LEVEL 4 — EXPERT
You have an excellent level of fitness and are used to long days of mountain biking. Rides of 6 hours or more, significant elevation gain, long climbs and sections where you need to push or carry your bike are all within your ability.
TWO LEVELS THAT CAN BE DIFFERENT
Your technical level and fitness level are not necessarily the same.
For example, you might be technical level 3 but fitness level 1, or the other way around.
This information allows your guide to adapt the route, trail difficulty, elevation gain and pace of the ride to provide an experience suited to you.
